Following the United Arab Emirates’ successful bid to host World Expo 2020, United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron offered his congratulations to the country. Cameron’s remarks, which were joined by statements from the UK ambassador to the UAE and the UK foreign secretary, included praise for the transformation of Dubai, in particular, as an example to people in the Middle East and around the world.
Dubai beat out several other strong contenders to win World Expo 2020 hosting rights, in part on the strength of its vitality and cosmopolitan character. The World Expo, which serves as a showcase for innovation, has previously helped cities such as Chicago, London, Paris, and Montreal increase economic growth and tourism. Dubai will be the first city located in the Middle East to host the event, and it will be organized around the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.” The UK ambassador compared the World Expo 2020 to London’s 2012 turn hosting the Olympics; years of preparation for that event sparked anticipation and pride throughout Britain, and a similar feeling of optimism is present in the UAE.
